Construction began on Lake Sam Rayburn Reservoir September 7, 1956 and it was completed March 29, 1965. Its main purpose was to be used for flood control, hydro electric powder and conservation of water, although it has also become a popular fishing, boating and recreational lake, boasting some of the best bass fishing in Texas, and hosting an astonishing 300 fishing tournaments annually.
